Let me tell you about my day…

I work at a nursing home with some awesome people. The administrator signed the social worker, my boss’s boss (Director of Financial Services), and me up for a seminar on Ethics and Residents’ Rights. The seminar was put on by the Georgia Healthcare Association, all the nursing homes in Georgia pay money to this organization and they put on conferences, seminars and classes. They are not a government organization.

The seminar took place today and the speaker was Dr. Ron Westbury who is a nursing home administrator as well as a pastor. He is also a dick.

They passed out a packet of all the slides we were going to cover and the presentation was supposed to be about new regulations and patients’ rights and other such stuff. Almost none of that was covered. We were preached to for 6+ hours. He started by mentioning his mission trip to Kenya, then discussed some political stuff, like the horrors of Medicaid patients and death panels. At one point he mentioned that if we saw a late-term abortion then we would never allow them to be legal. It was sort of in context but completely unneccessary. He dislikes poor people, also known as Medicaid patients, who are the worst ever ever.

He also told us personal stories about patients without mentioning their names but still, this is an ethics seminar. He bitched about all attorneys and how they’re scum and the devil. He mentioned that he’s been told to never touch employees but just can’t help hugging them and “pulling on their apron strings.” He’s a love-giver, like Jesus. Those are exact words. We as caregivers are “love-givers.”

This was all just before lunch. It got worse. Well he requested he say a blessing before our meal… Ugh.

And then, he eventually began to preach to us. Outright. We never got to the material we were supposed to cover. He recited Bible verses, spoke of the Lord and told us that we did not have to be afraid of death because of salvation. He advocated telling patients about Christ. He then SANG “Amazing Grace” and started crying. At that point we walked out. I’ve never felt so ambushed.

My boss’s boss promised me that she’s seen him speak before and it wasn’t that bad. The social worker and I were both completely upset by the whole display. I just cannot believe the GHCA would condone this bullshit.

I’m home now and feel more secure in my hatred of Christianity than ever before. Thanks Dr. Ron!
