Hite says that there is an underlying tension in relationships between girls that makes us compete with each other rather than get along. She thinks that if we could only overcome it, we would be all set for a new kind of 21st-century female power, one that relies not on trying to be sexier than one another, but on helping each other out.

Why do women let jealousy get in the way of friendship? - Times Online

this is a really good article going through Hite’s argument for better and long-lasting friendships among women. -florajasmine-

Everyone competes, some just do it more than others. Many girls compete: who looks the best, who has the best clothes, who gets the most dudes, who gets engaged first, who has the best job, who makes the most money, who has the best body etc. etc. But so do guys! And they seem to get along fine. While this girl competition can certainly undermine friendships, not all competition is bad. If you’re striving to be better than someone than you push yourself more.

Sure the superficial, who’s sexier thing is not all that productive, and the worst kind of competing would be wanting to always be the thinnest, the prettiest, instead of just accepting who you are. But otherwise, being jealous because your friend has something does not mean you aren’t happy for her, it may just mean you’re going to work harder to get it yourself.
