Contrariwise, Again (Or: Silly Obama!)
I could ramble on about mills post but tumblr’s not really the place for long polemics. So I’ll try to keep it brief.
First I thought that the original post was referring to theists that push their religion onto others via politics, not theists who hold a political viewpoint and want to argue it via reasoned debate.
Second, on non-theist morality I’d recommend “Godless Morality” by Richard Halloway (an English Bishop), if you want a quick read on the web try 10 myths about secular humanism by Matt Cherry and Mollen Matsumura. As to where morality comes from read this article by Edward O. Wilson “The Biological basis for Morality”; more recent studies back up the idea that morality does indeed have biological roots.
On the topic of forgiveness check out Austin Cline’s article “Myth: Atheists and the Atheistic World View Don’t Allow for Forgiveness”. Yes most atheists can actually forgive, after all it is a human trait.
Yes the original post was just that: Nathan does not appreciate people who push their ideologies and theology on others through politics and also a touch frustrated with intolerance.
Thanks for the great links, I’ll be sure to check ‘em all out and pass them along.
