When I wear dresses, it’s because I want to look cute, not because I want men to look at me.

The thing is, whether we like it or not, most men out there are very simple creatures. Women can tell themselves whatever they want, truth is: if you put your lady junk out on display, or wear a short skirt, or revealing clothing in general, you are asking for it (in their minds.) You’re making yourself vulnerable to whatever judgements the people who are seeing you might have.

Most men out there are not feminists, they do not think the way we think. They see cleavage or leg and they respond to it the way they think is ok for them to. Sure it’s unfair and it’s shitty but the world is a shitty place in general. I don’t know why this comes as such a surprise to people. People are getting hacked to death and slaughtered in Darfur, pretty girls can’t wear dresses without attracting often unwanted male attention. It’s how shit goes.

That’s pretty depressing. So we can’t demand change and assert ourselves because “boys will be boys”? Because that’s just the way it is?

I prefer to be more optimistic. By speaking out and combating sexism — and introducing feminism to men and women in accessible ways — I’d like to think that we’ll grow closer to having a society where women are not seen as objects or ornaments. Obviously that’s not the way the world is now, and I’m not “surprised” that this is the way it is. I just expect more and am willing to work for it.

I 100% agree with you. Why should we be complacent? Accepting bad behavior because that’s just the way it goes is ridiculous. In other instances people don’t just accept shitty circumstances, so why should this issue be any different?
