Push: A Novel by Sapphire

So as I was watching The View this morning, they spoke of this movie, which Sherri Shepard is in and I think plays the teacher at the alternative school Precious goes to. When I read this article a couple weeks ago, I wracked my brain to remember the name of the book I read a couple years ago that was eerily and sadly similar to that situation. Precious’s character and this book stuck with me and I was so surprised to learn this morning, that they made it into a movie. Push is a short novel but painful to get through. I was required to read it for a Women’s Studies class and was shocked by how graphic and horrific it was. The book turned my stomach, literally, I felt ill while reading about how Precious’s mother and father sexually, emotionally, and physically abused her, but I’m so glad I read it. It really is an uplifting story, and not just for the fact that your life is probably 100 times better than Precious’s so you feel grateful, but because it shows that no matter what happens, you can survive and you can persevere. I highly highly highly highly recommend reading Push.
